At James River Nurseries, we understand adding to the curb appeal of a property is only a small part of what landscaping offers in the way of benefits.  There is a term, biophilia, which means we as humans are drawn toward, and have an affinity for nature.  The hypothesis regarding biophilia "suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connection with nature and other forms of life."

Studies have indicated this innate tendency to seek connection with nature actually offers a wide variety of health benefits for both the body and the mind.

One research group analyzed over 140 studies involving more than 290 million people to see if there really was a connection between being outside and better health.

According to their research, they found that "spending time in, or living close to, natural green spaces is associated with diverse and significant benefits.  It reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, and preterm birth, and increases sleep duration.  People living closer to nature also had reduced diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and stress.  In fact, one of the really interesting things (we) found is that exposure to greenspace significantly reduces people's levels of cortisol - a physiological marker of stress."

Architects as well as landscape architects have popularized the term biophilic design, "a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place condition."

At James River Nurseries, we believe in the work we do!  Not only because of the aesthetic beauty we are able to add to an outdoor space, but because we understand there is so much more to the services we offer!
