James River Nurseries would like to say Thank You to Robert Saunders of Saunders Brothers for spending a day at our nursery updating us on the status of the boxwood as well as a variety of other plants. In case you are not familiar with Saunders Brothers, they were founded in 1915 with a partnership between five brothers. Today, third generation brothers Tom, Bennett, Jim, and Robert, with their dad Paul, operate a wholesale nursery, orchard, and farm market.

Though they do not limit themselves to just growing boxwood, it is something that the family has had a keen interest in since Robert’s grandmother, Mildred, began surrounding their home with boxwood. The story is told that, “Upon moving to what would become the family home in the late 1930’s, she began surrounding the home with boxwood. Many of those original plants still stand today. Then in the late spring of 1947, Paul propagated his first boxwood with the help of his mother and an inspiring science teacher. On the sticky clay bank near the present day container nursery, 25 of 77 cuttings took root and a nursery was born.”

At James River Nurseries we understand the importance and value that it brings to our customers for us to remain on the cutting edge of our industry. Just as with all industries, continuing education is an essential element to being a leader in your field. It is no different with us.

Staying informed regarding plants that are thriving and those that are falling out of favor for one reason or another, place us in the best position to recommend proper plant varieties to our clients.  Saunders Brothers is well known in the Mid-Atlantic as an expert on the boxwood and we appreciate Robert's time and expertise in sharing the most up-to-date information on the boxwood as well as a variety of other plants.

If you are ever in Nelson County, Virginia you should take time to stop by their Farm Market. They grow some awesome peaches, apples and Asian pears. They also have vegetables, flowering shrubs, annuals and perennials. Oh, and we recommend that you try some of their mouth-watering peach ice cream, we think you will be glad you did!!!
