James River Nurseries loves being a member of the Richmond community and we take great pride in participating in projects designed to enhance the lives of those living in our community. One such project is the Richmond Community ToolBank and we’d like to share with you a little about this fledgling organization and how we came to play a role.

A couple of years ago John Guidon, head of our hardscapes division, was introduced to the idea of opening a Community ToolBank here in Richmond and was asked to join the Board of Directors. Since accepting that offer, John, along with the other members of the Board of Directors, community partners, nonprofit organizations, ToolBank USA and volunteers have worked diligently to make that vision a reality. On March 19, 2015, the Richmond Community ToolBank celebrated their grand opening.

Modeled after the highly successful Atlanta ToolBank, the Richmond Toolbank is a nonprofit tool lending program designed to provide fellow not-for-profit organizations year-round access to an inventory of tools for a nominal fee. Organizations such as public schools, charitable groups, neighborhood associations, faith-based groups, government agencies and civic groups can all benefit from the resources and tools available through the ToolBank. “Access to ToolBank tools eliminates the need for agencies to incur the expense of purchasing, repairing, and storing tools, reducing the costs associated with service projects and allowing these agencies to focus more of their resources on their mission.”

The ToolBank is an awesome conduit between those who “have” (be it time, talent, resources or treasure) and those who are doing good work in the community. “ToolBank tools are inexpensive, convenient, and fully functional, maximizing the agencies’ financial and human resources and empowering them to improve community engagement and to achieve greater impact for those they serve."

At James River Nurseries, we understand the value of a strong community and the role it plays in making all of our lives better.  Supporting organizations like the Richmond Community ToolBank is a great way for us to give back to the community which has given us so much.  We would like to thank John Guidon for his time and dedication to the Richmond Community ToolBank, as well as Mike Hildebrand, the owner of our company, for supporting John in his efforts by donating resources to the ToolBank.

James River Nurseries would like to welcome Eric Schlosser to our company.  Eric graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from North Carolina State University (go wolfpack!).  Since that time, Eric has been involved in all aspects of our industry, including landscape design, installation, maintenance, pesticide application, operation of construction machinery, job cost estimating, project management, hardscapes as well as owning his own full service landscape company down in Asheville, North Carolina.

Eric brings a wealth of knowledge, talent and experience to our company and we are excited to have him as a member of our team.

James River Nurseries is a professional landscape company that has been serving Richmond, Va. and the surrounding counties for over 30 years. Founded in 1983, our company has firmly taken root in the community by adhering strictly to three core commitments: 1) striving for 100% customer satisfaction 2) providing quality plant material at competitive pricing with expert installation 3) providing courteous and dependable service.

This simple formula stands as the foundation of our company’s longstanding success and we believe our track record speaks volumes as to how these core commitments have allowed us to become one of the largest and most successful landscape companies in Central Virginia.

We take great pride in having earned a reputation as a go-to landscape contractor by some of the most well respected builders, developers, general contractors, and landscape architects, as well as countless homeowners, and are more than willing to put the effort in order to maintain our reputation.

So to all of our clients, both past and present, we say Thank You for your trust in us, and to those of you we have not yet had the pleasure to work with, we would like to say, if you have a landscaping or hardscapes project on your horizon, we hope you will give us an opportunity to demonstrate our core commitments to you as a client. We think you’ll like the results.

It has come to our attention the landscaping industry often fails to talk to clients about landscaping as an investment. In fact, Vicki Bendure, a spokesperson for the Associated Landscape Contractors of America in Herndon, Virginia said “I believe the tendency in our industry is to focus not on the value of work, but on what we do really well: service.”

It is in that vein we thought we would share with you what some experts have said on the subject of landscaping as a value added proposition:

A Clemson University study concluded: “Homeowners wanting to increase the value of their property will do well to consider the cost-effective, return potential of quality landscaping, and to safeguard their investments by hiring licensed, professional landscape contractors to perform the work.”

In an article titled “Economic Benefits of Landscape,” by the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, they suggest “landscaping can add as much as 14% to the resale value of a building and speed its sale by as much as 6 weeks.”

And finally, in an article titled “Fertile Ground” by C. Taylor in Smart Money, it was suggested that “by spending 5% of the value of your home on the installation of a quality low maintenance landscape, you could boost the resale value by 15%, earning back 150% or more of your landscape investment.”

At James River Nurseries, we confess we are not real estate experts or even real estate appraisers, and we tend to focus more on helping our clients enhance the beauty and function of their property via our services, but who are we to argue with the mathematics of investing in landscaping. It sounds good to us, we hope it sounds good to you as well. So, if you have been thinking about enhancing your outdoor space with some landscaping and were waiting for that last nudge of inspiration to take action, maybe this will be it. If so, we look forward to hearing from you!

So, it's mid February in Central Virginia and Mother Nature has just flexed her muscle...result, roughly 8 inches of snow.  As you might imagine, not ideal weather conditions if you are a professional landscaping/hardscapes company.

At James River Nurseries, we know Mother Nature plays an invaluable role in the world of horticulture so we accept her in both the good times and the bad.  Instead of complaining, some of our guys will get out and plow snow, some of us will catch up on paperwork, and all of will be thinking...we cannot wait for spring!

In celebration of Mother Nature's power and beauty, we decided to post a short video offering a completely different side of her and maybe even prompt a little daydreaming about the warmth of summer.
