Mother Nature has once again flexed her muscles and demonstrated to everyone exactly who the boss is by dumping snow and freezing rain across the region.

At James River Nurseries, we believe one of our core strengths lies in our ability to maintain a positive outlook in most all situations. So like they say, if you are given lemons, well, make some lemonade!

Everyone knows that this type of weather does not create favorable conditions for getting plants in the ground, installing driveways, patios, or for that matter, any of the other services that we specialize in.  So instead of sitting around waiting for better weather, our guys have been out helping businesses in our community deal with the snow.  I mean, why not?  We have the equipment, skilled operators and guys who are willing to brave the elements to get the job done.  Several of our guys were out plowing snow in parking lots so that companies and businesses could get back to normal operation.

Although snow removal is not "what we do," we are capable of the task and willing to help companies and businesses in our area when plowing is needed.  If you would like a quote on our services for future snow events, give us a call.  We'll be happy to help if we can.

Oh, and just for the record, we don't know about you guys, but we are over the winter...Come On Spring!

For over 30 years, James River Nurseries has been a proud member of Central Virginia's community.  We have worked hard to serve our area with quality landscaping and hardscape services and have been recognized by some of the most successful builders, developers, and general contractors as well as thousands of individual homeowners as their go to contractor for these services.

We are humbled by the success that this community continues to afford us and because of that we make a conscious effort to give back.  Recently it came to our attention that a member of our community living in Goochland County was not able to navigate the steps to get into their home and was in need of a wheelchair ramp to accomplish this simple task that most of us have the benefit of taking for granted.  Although we don't build wheelchair ramps, we did recognize that we could help by installing a pad leading to the ramp.

So we donated the pavers needed for the project, and Dean, a valued employee of James River Nurseries, volunteered his time on a Saturday to install the pavers.  Thank You Dean!

We realize our limitations in having the ability to help everyone in need, but we do try to do our part as a member of this great community.  To learn more about our community involvement, you can go to: Community Stewardship

Butterfly, english country, formal, rain (and countless others) all represent types of gardens.  If you are thinking about creating a garden like feel in your yard, James River Nurseries can help with that.  If you have a specific design already in mind or have a plan that has been professionally drawn, our landscape team will work closely with you to bring that vision to life.  Or, if you are like many, you know the space you would like to transform, but are unsure of the best design, we are comfortable with that too.  Our on staff landscape architect and professional designers have the creativity, knowledge and skill needed to help design a garden that is appropriate for your space.  By contrasting colors and textures your garden area can become a feast for the eyes.

The first form of gardening was a plant-based food production system, but there is evidence that as far back as the 16th century BC individuals began creating gardens for purely aesthetic purposes.  This type of garden has long been desired as a place of peace, tranquility and a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

If you are considering a garden, and are seeking out creative garden ideas, you might want to consider putting the 2014 Historic Garden Tour on your itinerary.  The event is schedule for April 26 through May 3.  James River Nurseries is currently working on one of the gardens that will be featured this year.  The garden that we are working on is scheduled for  April 30th on the Historic Byrd Park and Maymont tour.  As we get closer to the event we will post additional information, but for a preview of the event you can visit Historic Garden Week.

O. K., so here is what we have learned from Mother Nature this week (nothing really new, but as with any good teacher, she likes to reinforce the message!).  When it snows in Richmond, schools close, grocery stores have long lines, and as for landscaping, well, let's just say it's not the ideal situation.

At James River Nurseries we are taking things in stride and enjoying what Mother Nature has given us.  We do however look forward to warmer temperatures and getting back to doing what we do best...getting plants in the ground!
