Move over golf course and make room for the working farm.  That's the growing sentiment across the country as developers embrace the working farm as a differentiating amenity for a new category of community known as "agrihoods."  An agrihood is defined as a single-family, multifamily, or mixed-use community built with a working farm or community garden as a focus.

James River Nurseries is excited to be a landscape contractor at Central Virginia's first 55+ agrihood, Chickahominy Falls.

Chickahominy Falls is an active adult community that will consist of 400 homes and a full functioning farm called Woodside Farms (barn included - fittingly called, "The Barn").  Additionally, the community will have a clubhouse with outdoor pool, fitness center, game room, library, and kitchen.  There will also be miles of walking trails, fishing ponds, tot lots for when family comes to visit, and a farmer's market area.

Encouraging social engagement and creating a sense of community through farm-centered events is the hallmark of the new agrihood.  And at Chickahominy Falls, it's no different.  The Barn, which includes a kitchen, will be a place where the homeowners, local chefs and caterers can enjoy the space to host cooking demonstrations, mingle with fellow neighbors at leisurely happy hours and more.  It will be a place where homeowners can "roll up (their) sleeves and help with the harvest" or "kick back and relax by the outdoor fireplace."

We'd like to give a shout-out to the Cresent Group, developers of Chickahominy Falls, for having the vision to bring the agrihood concept to Central Virginia.  Their dedication and hard work to make Chickahominy Falls a reality has been handsomely rewarded through record sales volume.  We'd like to wish them continued success and thank them for inviting James River Nurseries along on the journey as they introduce this new concept to the local market.

James River Nurseries recently completed a landscape installation project at the Faison Center.

Established in 1999, the Faison Center's mission is "to give children & adults with autism and related challenges the best opportunity to improve their life's journey through experienced-based practices."

Using evidence based treatment, research, and community education, Faison serves as a "learning center where the most effective autism therapies are used, taught, and shared."

At James River Nurseries, we believe everyone benefits from a strong community, and the Faison Center is an important component of our community's strength.  By serving those with autism, as well as their families, they help them not only navigate the associated obstacles and challenges, but provide the tools and support that allow them to thrive, and that is a great service indeed.

If you would like to learn more about the Faison Center or would like to help them either by donating or volunteering, please visit their website.

James River Nurseries would like to congratulate Robbie Layne, a valued employee, for passing the exam to become a Virginia Certified Horticulturist (VCH).  This rigorous four-hour exam typically takes up to 6 months to prepare for and covers a broad range of horticulture subjects including basic botany, soils and fertilization, diseases, pesticides, plant propagation, trees and shrubs, perennials and annuals, landscape design as well as many other related topics.

"The VCH designation offers many benefits to businesses and consumers as well.  Consumers are assured they will receive professional services from a capable associate and the confidence that any business employing a VCH certified employee is a credible source for their nursery or landscaping needs."

The designation symbolizes the recipients desire to be informed on the latest developments in the industry allowing them to be well positioned to provide their clients with accurate and reliable information.

Here at James River Nurseries, we appreciate Robbie's continued interest in honing his skill and congratulate him on passing the exam to become a Virginia Certified Horticulturist!

James River Nurseries recently completed landscaping the new VCU College of Health Professions building.

The VCU College of Health Professions, formerly the School of Allied Health Professions, is relocating to this brand new 154,000 square-foot building featuring "cutting edge learning laboratories designed for human simulation, diagnostic technology, rehabilitation and counseling education.  Flexible classrooms will be designated to promote student engagement and to foster distance learning opportunities."

The new facility will be large enough to provide a unified space for the college's nine academic units, the doctoral program in health-related sciences, the dean's office and the Virginia Center on Aging.  The College of Health Professions had been scattered among five buildings on two campuses.

Here at James River Nruseries, we know how fortunate we are to have Virginia Commonwealth University part of the Central Virginia community and wish the best to all those who will be working and learning in the new College of Health Professions facility.
