At James River Nurseries, we believe great landscapes aren’t just built—they’re thoughtfully crafted to evoke feeling, function, and connection to the environment. Our latest project in Richmond’s Three Chopt neighborhood exemplifies this philosophy through the timeless beauty of natural materials and intentional design.
We’re currently in the process of installing an irregular stone hardscape, using a blend of native and locally sourced stone to shape a rustic, organic outdoor space that harmonizes with its surroundings. Rather than opting for a clean, symmetrical layout, this design embraces asymmetry and variation—allowing the irregular edges of the stone to tell a more natural story.
What makes this project truly special is the way it integrates hardscape with softscape. Between the irregular stone pavers, our team is carefully introducing groundcovers like creeping thyme, moss, and low-growing sedums. These low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants soften the stone edges while enhancing the overall look with texture and seasonal color.
As spring begins to unfold, the surrounding blooms add even more serenity to the scene. Flowering perennials and ornamental grasses sway gently nearby, creating a tranquil retreat that feels more like a quiet woodland path than a suburban backyard. It’s this thoughtful balance between structure and softness that elevates the space beyond simple function—making it a destination.
Irregular stonework is more than an aesthetic choice. It reflects a growing movement toward biophilic design—an approach that prioritizes a deeper connection between people and nature. These types of installations:
In a world where so much of our built environment feels rigid or overdesigned, naturalistic hardscapes offer something refreshing: the beauty of imperfection and the quiet power of the natural world.
