Project Update: Growing with Libbie Mill—New Streetscapes & Pollinator Pathway Take Shape

Development continues at Libbie Mill–Midtown, one of Richmond’s most dynamic mixed-use communities, and the James River Nurseries team is proud to play a role in its ongoing transformation. Recent landscape progress includes the newest section of condos along Libbie Lake West Street as well as a thoughtfully designed pollinator pathway adjacent to the Libbie Mill Library.

These new landscape installations reflect Libbie Mill’s long-term commitment to beauty, livability, and ecological stewardship—values that align strongly with our approach to landscape design and construction.

Modern Plant Palette for a Clean, Architectural Streetscape

The landscape installed along the latest condominium section brings a fresh, modern streetscape aesthetic while maintaining durability and low maintenance for long-term performance. The plant palette was chosen for structure, seasonal interest, and contrast against the architecture.

Featured plants include:

  • Distylium – A versatile evergreen foundation plant with clean lines
  • Catmint (Nepeta) – A pollinator favorite with silvery foliage and soft lavender blooms
  • Gaura (Whirling Butterflies) – Delicate movement and long blooming season
  • Inkberry Holly (Ilex glabra) – Native evergreen for structure and year-round form

To finish the look, we incorporated rounded river rock accents, creating a natural but refined transition from building to landscape. The result is a clean streetscape that feels cohesive, intentional, and regionally appropriate.

Pollinator Pathway: Beauty with Environmental Purpose

Just steps from the streetscape installation, a new pollinator pathway now borders the Libbie Mill Library and walking trail. Designed to support local ecology, the plantings provide nectar-rich food sources, habitat structure, and movement for beneficial insects and birds throughout the growing season.

The pathway features:

  • Shasta daisies
  • Gaura
  • Nepeta
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Evergreen anchor shrubs

These layered plantings offer four-season appeal—color in spring and summer, graceful texture in fall, and structural interest in winter.
