Project Feature: Riverfront Landscape Completed in Port Royal, Virginia

Perched above the Rappahannock River in historic Port Royal, this luxury residence called for a landscape that could match its architectural presence and extraordinary natural setting. Designed by David Lisowski of Balzer & Associates, the home blends timeless materials with river views—and now, a custom landscape by James River Nurseries completes the picture.

After more than two years of phased installation, this project has reached full completion, and the result is a refined and enduring landscape rooted in place.

A Landscape That Evolves with the Land

From the beginning, long-term success meant planning in phases. During the first stage, our team focused on structure, scale, and privacy—establishing the framework of the design well before finishing touches were added.

Key early elements included:

  • Large caliper tree installation along the drive to establish arrival impact
  • Privacy buffers strategically placed using native and evergreen plant groupings
  • Grading, soil preparation, and drainage strategy to support long-term plant health

These foundational elements created immediate maturity on site while setting the stage for layered landscape development over time.

Planting Design That Honors the Setting

Once the structural phase was complete, our team moved into ornamental and foundation planting to frame the home’s architecture and invite softness into the design.

Thoughtful plant selections were chosen for coastal adaptability, texture, and seasonal transitions, including:

  • Evergreen anchors for year-round structure
  • Flowering shrubs and perennials for extended bloom interest
  • Ornamental grasses to reflect movement and natural character along the river

Stone drip edges were integrated around the home for drainage control and durability while adding clean, timeless detailing to the planting beds.

Finishing the Vision with Sod & Site Balance

Expansive sod installation brought the project together, offering balance between structured planting beds and open lawn areas. The soft grade transitions and sweeping lawn also help guide the eye outward—connecting the residence to its panoramic river views.

Craftsmanship You Can Feel—Now and for Years to Come

From design through installation, every decision was made with longevity and performance in mind. This landscape is built not only to look beautiful today, but to grow in character over time. With careful plant selection, strong architectural lines, and site-sensitive detailing, it feels like it has always belonged here.

Whether you’re planning a new build or transforming an established property, our team has the experience to deliver landscapes that are built to last.

Let’s build something exceptional together.
