Start With the Site, Not the Plant List
Every property has its own combination of sunlight, moisture, drainage, airflow, soil composition and available space. Plant selection should begin with an honest reading of those conditions. A beautiful plant placed in the wrong environment can struggle even with attentive care, while a well-matched plant often settles in and improves over time.
In Central Virginia, summer heat, periods of drought and heavy clay soils make site evaluation especially important.
Common Plant Placement Problems
- Bigleaf hydrangeas in harsh afternoon sun: Hydrangea macrophylla often performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade. Too much late-day heat can lead to scorched leaves and repeated wilting.
- Boxwoods in poorly drained clay: Boxwoods prefer well-drained soil. Wet roots and compacted sites can contribute to stress and decline.
- Large plants in undersized spaces: A shrub may look perfect when newly installed but overwhelm a walkway or foundation as it reaches mature size.
- Moisture-loving plants on dry slopes: Irrigation can compensate temporarily, but a plant suited to the site's natural moisture pattern will usually perform more reliably.
Designing for Long-Term Performance
Thoughtful plant selection considers what a landscape will become, not only how it looks on installation day. Mature height and spread, seasonal interest, maintenance needs and relationships between neighboring plants all matter.
